Little Lyon Time!

Filed in: Personal

I HATE keeping secrets, and for the past couple of months, my husband Nate and I have been keeping what is quite possibly the most exciting thing to ever happen to us a secret. But secret time is over, and it’s time to announce…

I’m pregnant! Nate and I will be welcoming our first little Lyon this October 🙂 And we couldn’t be happier!

Now, for a little catch-up! First, let me say how GOOD it feels to let our secret out! Whew!! Coming from me, who can’t even wait until Christmas for people to open their gifts from me, that was tough! I’m so happy to share the news and be officially secret-free!

I always wondered how I would react when the two little pink lines magically appear on one of those sticks, but I never thought it would happen like it did! After feeling nauseous for a day, I felt a little suspicious, and decided to (you guessed it) pee on a stick! (So glamorous, isn’t it! I mean it’s 2012, can’t they figure out a better way to tell if you’re pregnant by now?) Immediately, I thought I saw 2 lines, but I put it down on the counter, and sat with Nate to wait. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

After the longest 3 minutes of my life, I got up to take a peek at the test. We were both skeptical, to say the least! I mean, it couldn’t really be happening, right? We had just decided to try to have a baby! I looked at the little stick, and there they were…

Two. Pink. Lines.

And if there was ever to be a photo of two people with the most shocked, and joyful faces in the history of the world, it would have been then. (Darn me for not being able to do two things at once…)

It was real. It didn’t feel real. It didn’t seem real. But, those lines were telling us, it was real.

Holy. Fricking. Smokes! I’m…pregnant?!?! Eeep!

The next day, we decided to tell my family, who lives in Iowa. I know, you’re supposed to wait, and bla bla bla, but HOW COULD WE NOT TELL OUR FAMILIES? So, we got my mom on Skype, and struck up a conversation about her growing boutique dog clothing shop. Then, we asked her, “So, do you think you could make your famous doggie pjs with 2 arms and 2 legs, instead of 4 legs? You know, in case you wanted to put it on something other than a dog?” And she replies, “Well I suppose, but why would I want to?” Then her jaw dropped and she made the most hilarious expression. Ever. The last thing she was expecting was happening. The tears and smiles rolled in, and she giggled the rest of the time we talked, just like a cute grandma does.

Nate’s parents came over for dinner the following night, and we surprised them with a “late Christmas gift” (the only excuse we could come up with for giving parents a random gift  that made any sort of sense) A baby lion hat, and a onesie. And then, the tears flowed. Such a cute moment that I’ll never forget. This will be their first grandchild, and the look on their faces was just so stinking cute. It was like we were the ice cream man on the first day of spring to a group of little kids – except a hundred times more. Loved it!

As we told a bit more family, the reality slowly began to sink in. And the more it sinks in, the more exciting it gets. The more those onesies in the spare bedroom mean, and the more I can’t wait to expand our little family. We’re in for the adventure of a lifetime, and I couldn’t be starting it with a better man.

Stay tuned for more details and the latest updates on the littlest Lyon 🙂

I didn’t even see this until now, and I was coming to your profile to tell you that I officially miss my aussie pal. You’re coming in October, right? The little one is going to need to meet it’s international aunt 😉 I’m thinking if I can record you saying things in your adorable accent and talking about qdoba and I play it when it sleeps, it could say some very interesting things as a toddler 🙂

    Kate and Nate,
I teared up reading your post. I WAS the grandma getting the news myself this year. First with Nate and Tara, I cried like a baby too. and then my daughter and her husband on Christmas morning surprising us. They wrapped up a kids toy, a sock monkey because I love them. I was hugging everyone and crying and I’m NOT much of a hugger. It is such an exciting time right now. My daughter is due July 12th so she’s finally starting to show. She’s a lot like I was, took well into the 5th month to start showing. She was worried something was wrong. Your baby and Boedi might share a birthday, wouldn’t that be cool too!
    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!
